WHAT TYPE OF THERAPY OR COUNSELLOR SHOULD I CHOOSE?
Choosing a counsellor can be a tricky thing for most people. So I try to make it as easy as possible for my clients. I want to make sure you choose someone that you feel comfortable with. Because your counselling process is important and so is getting the right counsellor for you.
The first step is contacting me, you can do this a number of ways: via email firstname.lastname@example.org or call/text on 021 1149794.
The next step is we meet to have an initial chat where I explain how I work and you might talk a little about what has brought you to counselling. From here we then can then decide if this is the best option for you.
If you decide that you would like to start a counselling process we look at a regular day or evening time that would suit. We also go over the conditions of therapy so we can begin our journey together.
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FIRST SESSION?
We start off by going over any questions you might have and then signing the boundaries of the sessions and confidentiality clause.
Then we can begin your session.
The first session can be different for each person and the important thing to know is that this is your time and you bring to the session what you feel comfortable sharing. Leigh uses her skills to support and guide you so that you process in a safe and genuine way. Your session is dependant on travelling at your pace and as we get to know and trust the process , like anything new, it becomes easier and more comfortable to do so.
HOW LONG ARE THE SESSIONS?
Counselling Sessions range from 40 minutes for children and 50 minutes for parents. Sessions are generally once a week but can be discussed around your needs. Sessions start at your allocated time and run for that time period.
The length of your counselling process is something we can discuss for children it is often a minimum of 12 sessions, with parent catchups every 3rd session.
COST OF THE SESSIONS
Please contact us for costs.
Payment can be made by cash or cheque at the session. Payments can also be made by Internet Banking in advance of your session only. A receipt can also be provided.
WINZ subsidies for counselling may be available if you are a beneficiary or on a low income and meet the criteria.
For WINZ subsidies your doctor and I will both need to sign a form (which I have) and then it needs to be processed through WINZ.
The cancellation policy for counselling requires at least 24 hours notice to be given otherwise a full fee will be charged for the missed session. Where possible, every effort will be made to reschedule cancelled appointments within the same week.
Counselling Confidentiality and Codes of Ethics
I am required to keep notes of our counselling sessions and your personal details, however all clinical notes are confidential and held safely. The only exception to maintaining confidentiality is if you were at risk of harm to yourself or others, in which case I am legally required to notify other agencies/services who can help. I would make all attempts to discuss this with you first if this was necessary.
To ensure my work with you remains as beneficial as possible I attend regular professional supervision with a supervisor and I also attend Peer Supervision with an NZAC Registered Counsellor. If I discuss your situation with my supervisor anonymity is assured as I will not use your full name or identifying details.
I am a provisional member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) and abide by the NZAC Code of Ethics.
